Many thanks to those who have participated in this group over the years!

The group is now closed. You will still be able to participate in HPA events as an individual (check the HPA website), or you can join our sister organization, Defense Against the Dark Arts, the Harry Potter Meetup Group of Northern Va, which hosts both social and charitable events in the area.

Good luck and take care! We know you are awesome people, who are doing awesome things in the world!

Want to Take Over Carpe Futurum?

Posted in Uncategorized on July 26, 2014 by carpefuturum

Many thanks to everyone who has participated in Carpe Futurum over the past few years! Your sense of service and dedication are greatly appreciated, both by us and those you have helped.

Unfortunately, neither Kate nor I are able to devote the time and energy to this HPA chapter that it deserves. If you’re interested in taking over management of this chapter, please e-mail by August 31, 2014. If no one volunteers, this chapter will be closed. However, you will still be able to participate in HPA events as an individual (check the HPA website), or you can join our sister organization, DADA, which hosts both social and charitable events in the Northern Virginia area.

Again, many thanks to all who have donated and participated!

The Inspiration of JKR

Posted in chapter project, meeting on June 24, 2013 by carpefuturum

JKR’s Harry Potter series inspired us to imagine better. It helped us create the Harry Potter Alliance and helped us to help make the world a better place. You’re welcome to join us and the northern VA Harry Potter meetup group at their monthly discussion Friday, June 28 to talk about how JKR’s stories have inspired you.

Accio Books 2012

Posted in chapter project, hpa project on July 10, 2012 by carpefuturum

Every year, the HPA hosts a charity book drive called Accio Books. Carpe Futurum is gearing up to participate in Accio Books this year, which will run from July through September (tentative dates).

Save the Date: September 30, 2012

On Sept 30, we’ll have our fun book sorting party. We’ll gather books that have been donated and sort them to the different organizations that will get the books.

Ways to Participate:

1. Collect books you no longer need. Ask your friends, family, co-workers, and/or classmates to donate books as well. Visit used book stores and library or church book sales to buy some books you want to donate. We will accept any books! Bring your books to any DADA event in July, August, or September or the September 30 sorting party.
2. We can only give to libraries and organizations that will NOT re-sell books (even if they resell them for charity, that’s against the rules). Find a local organization that fits this requirement and wants books. Ask them what kind of books they want and how many they want. Then send Kate the info.
3. Put a box out at your local community center, coffee shop, grocery store, workplace, or school, asking for book donations. Remember: we will accept ANY books!
4. Come to our sorting party on September 30 at Pohick Library in Burke from 1pm-5pm to help load/unload books, sort them to the different charities, and box them up. We’ll have music, food, and some prizes.

We may have some other events and ways to get involved, so please check back here regularly!

Last year we donated 5,003 books to 18 different charity organizations. Can we beat those numbers this year? Seize the future and help us get books to people in our community who need them!

Stream Clean Up: March 10 – ON YOUR OWN

Posted in on your own on February 19, 2012 by carpefuturum

Join Carpe Futurum, the DADA Meetup and the Arlington Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America for a clean up at Bull Run Stream.

Date: March 10
Time: 9am – noon
Location: Route 28 Access Point Parking Lot next to 7122 Centreville Rd, Centreville,VA 20121

There will be a short safety briefing and the group will be split into crews tasked with cleaning a particular section of stream. Trash bags, gloves and other equipment will then be distributed.

Crews will walk to their designated section which may be up to a mile downstream or upstream from the parking lot. At the assigned starting point, Volunteers will bag trash as they work their way back to the parking lot. Everyone should return to the parking lot at least by 11:45 where we will have a short debriefing.

Participants should dress for the weather conditions as this event will be held rain or shine. Participants may also wish to bring their own water although their will be some drinking water available.

Should be a fun way to welcome spring and help out the environment. Please RSVP here or on the Meetup page for this event!

UPDATE: This event has been changed to “on your own” status. The Izaak Walton League will still be holding the event, but it is no longer a Carpe Futurum group activity due to schedule conflicts. If you do go, have fun!

Interest Meeting & Goodie Bags for Orphans

Posted in chapter project, meeting on January 5, 2012 by carpefuturum

Happy new year, members of Carpe Futurum! We hope you’re ready for another exciting year of fighting the dark arts of the real world with Dumbledore’s Army here in Northern Virginia.

And we hope you’ll be able to join us for our 2012 interest meeting & first event on January 21. We will discuss projects we’d like to undertake while assembling goodie bags for the Orphan Foundation of America. The OFA sends these treats to young adults who have aged out of the system and have beaten the odds to make it to college. It gives them an extra sugar rush while doing classwork and lets them know there are people out there who care about their futures (we wish Harry had had that sort of message while growing up). This year, the OFA is sending Valentine’s Day themed care packages. Given that part of the Harry Potter Alliance’s logo is a heart, what could be more perfect?

Date: January 21, 2012
Time: 2:30 – 5:00 PM
Location: Meeting Room 116/117, Burke Centre Library, 5935 Freds Oak Road, Burke, VA 22015

Please join us for a fun meeting to brainstorm & help out orphans at the same time! We need lots of hands to help assemble goodie bags! Newcomers and familiar faces alike are all welcome.

Opportunity: Toys for Tots

Posted in on your own on December 17, 2011 by carpefuturum

Looking for another easy way to give to your community on your own? Toys for Tots is a project of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Its goal is to collect and distribute brand new toys to children who wouldn’t otherwise receive toys for the holidays. They will take any new, unwrapped toys (as well as donations, of course). If you still have some gift shopping to do, you might consider buying a toy to donate!

Most Toys for Tots drop-off bins are still accepting donations through the weekend and until roughly 12/22 (some locations stop accepting donations earlier).

Find a drop-off spot near you:

Kate donated a few toys at her local Giant Food store this week (most of the stores–if not all–have bins still). A My Little Pony and a snuggly puppy stuffed animal should make the holidays better for some kids somewhere!
