Sponsor a Walker in the DC Stop Modern Slavery Walk

Posted in notice on September 16, 2011 by carpefuturum

We learned about current day human trafficking and slavery during the Sixth Horcrux in the HPA’s Deathly Hallows campaign this year. There are an estimated 27 million slaves around the world, including within our D.C. Area communities. On Saturday, October 22, 2011 there will be a Stop Modern Slavery Walk in Washington, D.C.

Kate’s younger sister, Anna, is participating as a walker. If you’re so inclined, please donate to her fund-raising efforts (donations are tax deductible). You can also register to walk in the event or visit the site to find out more. The event includes a 5K walk, anti-trafficking resource fair, speakers, and musical performances.

Sponsor Kate’s Sister!

Even if you can’t donate or walk, please spread the word to your family & friends about this event! Thanks!

Kate’s Dear Mr. Potter Project – Need Your Help!

Posted in notice on August 24, 2011 by carpefuturum

Hi, it’s Kate here 🙂

Perhaps you’ve heard about the book, Dear Mr. Potter, which is a series of letters from Harry Potter fans around the world. If you don’t already have a copy, I highly recommend you get one because it’s great and inspirational and all proceeds go to benefit the Harry Potter Alliance! Find out more: http://thehpalliance.org/dearmrpotter/

I’d really like to make my copy of Dear Mr. Potter special by asking every Harry Potter fan I hang out with online or in real life to write a short letter I can insert into the book. It can have art, words, photos—whatever you want as long as it’s flat and can be inserted into the book (i.e., not a poem on a giant cloth banner or a wooden wand or a 50 page book). I would be honored if you would make a Dear Mr. Potter page about your experience as a fan and what Potter means to you (check out the book and the website for examples).

You can e-mail it to me as an attachment at kmcdevit@vt.edu or give it to me at a meeting!

Posted in chapter project, hpa project, meeting, notice on February 17, 2011 by carpefuturum

We’ve got so much going on at Carpe Futurum right now!

Bullying HorcruxStand up for equality and stand against bullying. Be sure to check out the information about the HPA’s latest horcrux to support the LGBTQ community all around the world. Also, you can find out how to participate and submit your points to help your house win the house cup! One of the things you can do to help is create a “Make it Better” video. We’ll have a camera available at the next meeting so you can film one, if you want. And keep some time free on February 26 to participate in Wrock 4 Equality 2011!

Meeting on Saturday, February 19 from 3-5pm at Kings Park Library Here’s what we’ll be doing at the Saturday meeting:

  1. Preparing for Accio Books!- We’ll make donation boxes, talk about some new twists for this year’s book drive, and plan ways to win the Chapter Cup again this year
  2. Filming Make it Better Videos- we’ll have the equipment available for filming short video segments. We’ll string everyone’s together into a chapter video.
  3. Planning the Display Case- During the month of March, a display about our chapter will be at the Burke Centre Library. Bring materials, items, and ideas for the display
  4. Becoming Film Stars- a media studies university student will be at the meeting to film our activities for a documentary about communities built around Harry Potter.

We hope to see you at the meeting!

We’d also like to let you know about the HPA’s newest horcrux to fight: the Body Bind horcrux. We’ve got some info up about it on our Third Horcrux page and you can find out more at the main HPA website. This January, focus on keeping your body healthy and happy. Liberacorpus!

Past, Present, & Future Fun!

Posted in chapter project, hpa project, meeting, notice on August 3, 2010 by carpefuturum

Check out the Projects section of our website for new info on the past, present, and future projects of Carpe Futurum! There are now write-ups and more photos of past projects, including the Charity Raffle at Sonorus, Can’t Stop the Serenity, and the HPAFTW campaign. Speaking of which, thanks to all members who voted and asked friends/family to vote as well. The HPA will be able to do so much good with the money we won for coming in first place!

We have some exciting events coming up as well! As you might know, Carpe Futurum is doing Wizard Rock the Vote this year to help get more people registered to vote in the upcoming fall election. We have WRocked the vote at two Wizard Rock concerts so far (one in Washington, DC and one in Virginia). Check the WRock the Vote page for more events where we will be registering voters. The page also gives some great voter registration info specific to our area.

Our next event will be on August 22 at the City of Fairfax Library in Fairfax, VA from 1-5pm. We’ll be getting together to play a whole bunch of Harry Potter board games. All you need to do is bring one (or more) of the school supplies on this list for charity and you’ll be granted admission to an afternoon of fun! We’ll also have voter registration forms on hand.

On October 2, Kate will be volunteering for the umpteenth time at AIDS Walk Washington in Washington, DC. If you are interested in volunteering with her at the event, send her an e-mail at kmcdevit@vt.edu.

And when the weather turns colder in November, we’ll be reviving our Magical Acts of Warmth project and meeting up to make some blankets for local people in need.

Support Another Fandom… for Charity

A few of us (Harry Potter fans) are going to be going to the Can’t Stop the Serenity event at the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse. We’ll be seeing Serenity there on Saturday, June 26 at 1pm. You can buy your tickets online for $8 + $0.45 (online service charge). Last year they sold out before the show, but the year before they didn’t, so you take your chances if you decide to buy tickets on the day of the show. There’s also a showing on the evening of Friday, June 25 (but we won’t be at that one). You can also buy some awesome event swag in advance before May 9.

The movie, Serenity, is the sequel to the Joss Whedon show, Firefly (if anyone hasn’t seen the show & wants to watch the series episodes before the movie, you can watch some episodes online at for free at Hulu or e-mail me about borrowing my DVD box set). This annual showing of the movie is a fandom effort to raise money for several different, great charities: Equality Now, Kids Need to Read, the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, So Others Might Eat, and Homeward Trails. In addition, they’ll be collecting non-perishable food items (especially ground coffee, cold cereal, canned meats/tuna) for So Others Might Eat and food & supplies (especially dog & cat toys and treats, food, postage stamps, collars and leashes) for Homeward Trails (an animal rescue program). Everyone who donates items for the human & pet drive will receive 2 raffle tickets.

So come hang out with some Harry Potter fans, support another fandom’s efforts, help charities, and see an awesome movie all at the same time!

Help End Breast Cancer

Posted in notice on April 22, 2010 by carpefuturum

One of our local Harry Potter fans is participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure. She will be walking 60 miles in order to help raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.

Maggie’s team name is We Love Mary. They are walking for two Marys – Mary Tuggle and Mary (Bea) Stallings – both breast cancer survivors. (Bea died in March 2008 at the age of 88). In order to walk, she and her mother must each raise $2,300. They are asking for help to reach the goal so they can participate in the race.

You can donate online at her personal fundraising page and click the donate button. Or you can visit The3Day.org, click on Donate to a Participant, and search by her name (Maggie Mack). You can also call 800-996-3DAY to donate over the phone.

If you can’t donate at this time, reply to this post or e-mail us with a supportive message for Maggie & her team and we’ll make sure she gets them/sees them all before the event!

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. Everything that we do today helps prevent breast cancer tomorrow … for everyone.

According to the most recent statistics:
· In 2006, 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer.
· And 40,820 women died from breast cancer.

All of those women were someone’s mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, or friend. You and I have to do everything possible to cure this disease. Please support We Love Mary by making a contribution to this team. Please do not think you need to make a big contribution to help. Every single penny will help.

Check back with Maggie at her personal fundraising page for further updates. Without a cure, one person will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States. That’s why Maggie & her mom are walking in this 3-day event. They want to do something bold about breast cancer. We hope that you’ll share this incredible adventure.
