Magical Acts of Warmth

Donated so far in 2010: 5 kids jackets, 2 pairs of gloves, 1 hat

(With much more to be donated this month!)
Magical Acts of Warmth is a drive to donate warm things to local shelters during the winter. There is no ending date for the drive, but it makes the most sense to donate warm things now when people need them the most.

As part of our Magical Acts of Warmth project this year, we made no-sew fleece blankets for Project Linus.

Date: November 13
Time: 2-5pm
Location: Pohick Regional Library meeting rooms, 6450 Sydenstricker Rd., Burke, VA 22015-4274

We have already contacted Project Linus and they said they will be thrilled to accept the blankets we make and get them to children in need. Project Linus’ mission is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”

Each blanket-maker was asked to bring $10 or their own supplies for making blankets. Participants also brought supplies such as scissors, rulers, yard sticks, seam rippers, and/or straight pins for us to use.

Members also brought any new or used Magical Acts of Warmth items to donate: gloves, mittens, scarves, hats, jackets, boots, socks, coats, or blankets. We’ll donate them to the Second Chance Thrift Store where proceeds go to fund medical care for rescued animals. Shelter House clients receive vouchers to shop there for free so your items may end up helping both animals AND people in our community 🙂

What else you can do for the project:

  • Create something warm! Knit, sew, crochet, create something warm: hats, mittens, scarves, gloves, socks, blankets, coats, sweaters, etc.
  • Raid your closet! Start your spring cleaning early and part with some items in good condition
  • Buy something new! There are some great sales out there. Pick up a brand new warm item or two for someone in need the next time you go shopping.

Get us your items:
Bring them to the meeting on November 13 at the Pohick Library. Or contact us and we’ll figure out how to get them to you.
