5. Illiteracy Horcrux

March & April 2011

Accio Books! is the HPA’s annual book drive for charity. Our chapter won the Chapter Cup for Accio Books in 2010. However, we didn’t win it in 2011. That honor went to the Marauders Chapter of St. Petersburg, Florida. Cheers!

Our Stats:

Books we collected: 5,003
Places we donated books: 18

That’s an amazing amount–about double what we did last year. Amazing work, Carpe Futurum!

What we did:

  • Made donation boxes for the community (not many were put out, but a couple were).
  • Received donations from a local girl scout troop (most were Harry Potter fans!)
  • Received donations from a local retirement home looking to get rid of books and a local Friends of the Library group after their book sale
  • Stationed ourselves at Borders in Springfield on the Sunday of the special Borders promotion with flyers (which we circulated amongst our friends). We bought some books as well, of course.
  • Hosted a sorting party to decide what books go to what location. Attendees had fun and those who donated books got little golden eggs as thank you gifts.
  • Gave out a gift bag to the member of the chapter who collected the most books.
  • Dropped off books at a variety of different locations.

Places we donated:

  • Any Soldier
  • The Book Thing of Baltimore
  • Burke Centre Library
  • David R. Pinn Community Center
  • DC Public Schools
  • ECHO
  • George Washington University Hospital
  • For the Love of Children
  • Heatherwood Retirement Community
  • The Imagine Better Library at the NYC Charter School
  • INOVA-Fairfax Health System
  • Kings Park Library
  • Operation Paperback
  • Pohick Regional Library
  • Reading Tree
  • Reston Regional Library
  • Sunrise at GMU Senior Living Community
  • The Virginian Retirement Community
